This bear has many of the hallmarks of an early-ish American bear – and he looks very like an early ‘Ideal’ bear in my Teddy Encyclopaedias but I can’t be sure, since he isn’t like any of my own English and German teds. Please read the very full description below and make up your own mind.
He is in reasonable condition, but he does have an injured paw, which I have photographed in some detail, so please do look carefully. In some of the pictures, I have given him a pair of striped socks, to protect the injury. He is quite clean and soft for such an elderly bear, but would benefit from some TLC to the paw.
He is 19 inches high, with a lovely broad head, nice little ears, slightly damaged wide-set eyes, (set below the face seams) which feel like glass and a horizontally stitched nose – again suggesting a US origin. His muzzle protrudes quite a bit.
He has a long body, quite slender shapely arms with rather worn beige flannel pads, and legs that are quite chubby at the top, and a bit longer than they appear in the pictures. Turning him over, I think he has been restitched down his back at some point in his life. If you look at the very top of the seam, where his body meets his head, it looks as though he may have had a small hump at one point. I’ve photographed it. Perhaps some of his stuffing has been replaced, and the hump has all but disappeared.
He is fully jointed, and very well and firmly stuffed. His head feels like wood wool or straw, but his body is a little bit softer. He’s a sturdy bear and has a very realistic look about him, with an engaging expression – a bit grumpy, but friendly too. I’m very fond of him already, but would like to rehome him, since I have too many bears.
