Early American Bear
This early 18.5″ American bear was appraised as an Ideal bear by Brenda Yenke (American vintage bear and toy appraiser and wife of Ken Yenke; author of book on Bing). However after studying it for some time and looking at reference books I came across a 1907 advert in Playthings for the Harman Mfg. co. of New York City which seems to show a range of bears that look very much like this one. It has to be said that there were a lot of similar looking bears during the early bear craze but it could possibly be a Harman. He has the long torpedo shape body of a lot of early American bears and the typical short bristly mohair. He retains a good 70% of his mohair with some balding to the right side of his body and a little on the left. He has glass eyes and cotton twill pads which are in good condition with only a small repair to his left foot pad. There is a small repair to the inside of his right leg and the nose looks like it has been restitched. He is mainly hard stuffed and all his joints move freely.
