An interesting, early German clockwork monkey with long cinnamon mohair, and original amber glass eyes. Although he has no ID as such, I’m fairly certain he’s a Bing c.1912. Not surprisingly for an antique toy, the monkey has lost his key winder, but I think a replacement could be found, as I’ve seen Bing keys for sale right here on ebay.
Although I’ve no idea if his clockwork mechanism still works, it makes a whirring noise every so often, sometimes when he’s moved or picked up. So it would seem this monkey is keen to swing into action! Quite what that action would be I’m not entirely sure, but at a guess he walks and moves his head from left to right. It’s possible he was originally holding cymbals or playing a drum or other musical instrument.
Apart from his torso which is completely packed with his mechanism, monkey’s head and limbs are woodwool-stuffed. His arms and legs are internally-wired and he’s fully-jointed. His arms are in a bent position – hence my theory he would have been playing some kind of instrument. His felt hands and feet are in very good condition. There’s just a teeny hole in the tip of a finger on each hand showing his wires, and likewise one of his little toes.
Monkey’s felt face has airbrushed markings, and also his ears. His mohair is a little sparse in places but, overall, I consider him to be in really good shape for his great age. He has a very cute expression, and is a lovable character just as he is, without performing any stunts. He measures 15 cms (10″) tall.
