Meet Bruno, a rather large, chubby bear who is 26″ tall. After some research, I believe he is a Dutch, Arthur van Gelden bear, which makes him quite rare. These bears are known for their solidity – he is very hard stuffed throughout. He also has the special black and white metal enamelled eyes (which are a little rusty at the white edge and have slightly marked the fabric) and the rounded prominent nose (slightly squishy at the end where his stuffing has shifted). His gold silk plush fur is in pretty good condition, with slightly flattened fur where he’s been sitting down and his fur is slightly lighter on his shoulders and the back of his head, possibly where he’s been sitting in sunlight. His original nose stitching is still there, but has been oversewn with newer black silk thread and his mouth stitching is not original. His ears are large but flop down a bit. He has short straight arms (the stuffing has sagged a little at the top of his left arm) longer legs and his paw pads are all in a slightly lighter coloured silk plush than the rest of his fur. He is fully jointed and everything is moving smoothly, except his head which has been stitched in place – only loosely and could easily be fixed; I think he just has a couple of places where the seam has come away from the disc joint in his neck. Van Gelden bears were only made up to WW2, so if he is, as I believe him to be, one of these rare bears, then he’s a very good, clean example of one and a great addition to any collection. He’s a large, heavy bear, and this is reflected in the postage. Please look at the pictures to make your own decision about his make.
