VINTAGE PLUSH FULLY JOINTED TEDDY BEAR.
A recent farmhouse clearance on the very edge of Dartmoor, an ancient property heated by huge open fires and lit only by kerosene lamps, has just been completed. The property, left in a will to a ‘once colleague’ of mine, is to be demolished with planning permission being sought for re-development. I did mention, in passing, that had he stopped to consider ‘The Preservation of Rural England.’ His answer was concise and abrupt. He brusquely but politely reminded me that I worked on an a need to know basis’ and that it all had to be cleared, irrespective of who did it. However, this basically labour intensive task, fell to me as he ‘happened to know’ that I was in the trade,….so to speak. The job, well my part of the job, has now been completed and many items of antiquity, knick-knacks and furniture came my way for a pittance. Having pointed to several pieces in relation to their removal, the same answer was made each time…..”your van or there! he indicated, pointing a podgy finger at the vast bonfire. I saw chests of drawers, cupboards, half burnt pictures, the lot, all going up in smoke. It was absolutely criminal, but the items were his to do with how he liked! I genuinely consider these items that I now own, not just recovered but rescued!……at the cost of a huge amount of muck and sweat I might add. Milking parlours, shippens and various outside buildings were cleared as per our contract but precious little of saleable value was recovered. Just one lean-to, a sort of tool shed, disgorged a substantial number of tinplate oddities, train sets & track, old peashooters (haven’t seen one for years!) and a number of furry toys and dolls.
This particular item is a honey plush teddy bear with totally jointed body and head. The eyes are ‘glass?’. The pads have been recovered at one point and the nose is stitched. An inoperative ‘growler’ is fitted internally. This can be heard as ‘bumping’ from inside his chest. He has retained a good amount of his original fur and by and large he’s in a reasonable cosmetic condition. Size is 16 tall.
