This old boy is a one of a kind antique Alpha Farnell teddy bear! He is sold complete, not only with his Airedale terrier friend, but also with his original outfit, seen in some of the photographs. A few of his old garments were hand ‘tailored’ for him and when he came to me, these clothes were stitched (badly) to his body. When I (reluctantly) decided to part with him, I had to unpick the clothes and I have now washed the kilt and waistcoat because they were filthy and I had to replace the shirt – the original one was beyond saving.
This handsome old boy is known as the ‘Colonel’ and you will see that he wears, with pride his antique shirt, plus a very tatty blue felt waistcoat, a wool kilt – which is handmade but this is also a bit tatty – and of course he has his maroon felt beret and his faithful friend, his four legged companion, the 11″ un jointed mohair terrier dog, with made in Ireland label.
The Colonel dates from late 1920’s era and has a tiny remnant of his Alpha Farnell label to his left foot pad. This Farnell design was a change from their earlier, more traditional teddy bears and I think he is one of the most appealing Farnell bears I have ever seen. But don’t take my word for this, please view all of the photographs and please do read the item description and written condition report, prior to bidding.
This fine old teddy is clearly not even close to being in perfect condition – but his appeal is not so much about pristine ‘as new’ condition; it is about how loved and valued he has always been by his previous family. If only he could tell us his story!
The Colonel goes to his new home with all of his clothes and his dog – who I think has been with him since the 1950’s.Although at 24″, this a big teddy, because he is filled with a mix of wood-wool and Kapok, the Colonel is not too heavy but he has ‘baggage’ so postage is 15 in the UK.
