This beautiful antique white mohair teddy bear is in wonderful, virtually as new condition.
There are only very minor signs of slight thinning to the lovely white mohair, and you have to examine him extremely closely to notice this.
He has a working growler mechanism, so he “speaks” when he is gently shaken. The noise he makes is gentle sound and quite endearing.
He has a pronounced hump to his back and has the lovely shaping of early 20th century teddy bears.
I think he is likely to be of American origin because he has certain characteristics similar to the better quality American teddy bears from the early 1900’s.
His glass eyes are set deeply and quite far back in his head, like other American teddies.
We know that American manufacturers used glass eyes from quite early on, and these glass eyes could be original – although they do look a bit small for the size of the teddy.
I have given a lot of thought to the nose/mouth stitching and have concluded it cannot be original to the bear, although it may follow the outline of the original stitching.
I could be wrong about this, and about his country of origin. If anyone knows more, please let me know and I will update the listing accordingly.
Regardless of maker, this is an exceptionally fine antique teddy bear, in very good condition. Offered for sale complete with his collar.
