Here we have a rare black Roullet & Decamps automaton cat made in France in the early part of 1900s. This clockwork automaton cat is in outstanding condition and has three movements including “walking” feet, opening mouth, wagging tail, and also a meowing sound. As images show the cat is made with a molded paper mache body and head aka “carton” that is covered with soft real rabbit fur, he has realistic green glass eyes with slit pupils, a composition lower jaw with molded and painted teeth, and black rabbit fur over paper~mache leg coverings over the flat steel mechanical legs. The automaton functions well and the carton body and head are firm and solid. When wound the cat will move all four legs in a walking motion, the mouth will open and close while it wags its tail and emits a loud and clear meow from the bellows inside. On the bottom of each leg is a small rubber wheel that the cat walks on. Hidden under the tail is the on/off lever that is working correctly. Please note there is wear to his body by the key wind as you would expect, other than this he is in great shape and certainly a most unusual example of his type, I have not seen another in black. He measures 14″ long by 10″ high not including his long tail. Please view all images for detail. Thanks for stopping by my Emporium today!
