A rare and appealing vintage Chad Valley tiger soft toy. The tiger resembles the E. H. Shepherd illustrations of Tigger who features in the Winnie the Pooh story The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne, written in 1928. This toy tiger with his green eyes and stumpy paws also bears some resemblance to Christopher Robin’s original Tigger toy which is in New York City Library (see photo). The stories were made popular by the children’s radio programme “Children’s Hour”, 1922 to 1968, and Chad Valley and other companies produced soft toys and games inspired by the stories, though I have never before seen a vintage 1950s Tigger.He is in clean condition though his plush is worn and faded. His pads are felt with a little wear & holes (see photos.) His stripes are faded but still visible and he has a long tiger’s tail and green tiger’s eyes. He has a printed label sewn into his side seam which says ” Made in England by Chad Valley toys” and, on his right foot is the square Royal Warrant Queen Mother label, very faded but typical of Chad Valley toys from 1953 onwards (see photos.) He measures about 14 inches (35.5 cm.) high and is stuffed with kapok as is usual with Chad Valley teddies from the 1920s onwards.The photos can be enlarged for more detail – please take care to look at all 12 photos to see Tigger in detail.I guarantee that this is a genuine vintage Chad Valley tiger soft toy from the 1950s, most likely based on the character Tigger from the Winnie The Pooh story book.
