This is an original piglet doll dating from around 1924, it is identical to the toy bought by A.A. Milne for his son Christopher Robin that would prove to be the inspiration for the Piglet character in his Winnie The Pooh series of books.
It was bought for my mother around the time of her birth in February 1924 and has remained in the family ever since.
The toy bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh was an 18 Alpha Farnell teddy bear bought from Harrods for Christopher Robin on his first birthday.
Winnie the Pooh made his first appearance in a poem published in Punch magazine in February 1924.
The rest of the toys, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Rabbit and Tigger, were received as gifts by Christopher Robin between 1921 and 1928.
In 1947, Milnes American publisher spotted Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger and Kanga in the corner of the authors living-room and asked if he could take them on a promotional tour of the US.
In September 1987, they were presented to the New York Public Library, where they are now kept in a bullet-proof display case. Their well-worn appearance may be due to the involvement of the family dog and the nose on Milnes Piglet has been repaired as it was badly bitten by a neighbours dog.
This Piglet toy is in original unrestored condition. (see images)Size is approximately 12cm tall
