Rare American Teddy Bear Doll c1907Possibly Havana Novelty Co New York10.5″
This unusual Teddy Bear Doll is just like the standard Teddy bear but with an imported German bisque head with piercing fixed blue eyes. The body has jointed arms and legs with a partially working squeaker in the tummy and is stuffed with wood wool. There is approximately 30% of mohair remaining with baldness to the back, left arm and other general places. The pads are the original felt and in excellent condition with no holes. There are five claws on each limb. The teddy bonnet is detached and I think there would have been a bow at the neck. The china head is undamaged although some of the blonde hair is missing. Still very sweet and a nice cabinet size.Page 37 of Patricia N.Schoonmaker’s “A Collector’s History Of The Teddy Bear” shows some early adverts by the Havana Novelty Co that have a strong resemblance to this Teddy Doll.
