Old vintage antique Merrythought teddy bear. Vintage 1930s old bear.Dickens is a characterful, old English Merrythought, 15 inch vintage teddy bear whose tag dates him to the 1930s as far as I can tell. The tag reads ” Merrythought Hygienic Toys Made in England” .He also has a metal button in his left ear at the back, and it looks as if that ear has been sewn back on at some point. Dickens has lovely, but quite sparse golden yellow mohair, indeed he is quite bald in places.He is soft stuffed, presumably with kapok and has a wood wool snout. There used to be a squeaker in his tummy, but sadly this no longer works…He is fully jointed with good joint connections, and has glass eyes and stitched features. The eyes may have been replaced, but the features look to me to be original. Dickens has his original felt pads to the feet , and as can be seen in the photos, the left paw will need some recovering. Someone at some point has recovered his right paw, but in a different material. He has three claws each on his feet and what may have been four webbed claws on his upper paws as far as I can tell.There is some kind of mark on the back of his left leg, but his mohair covers a fair bit of that, and as has been mentioned in the condition report, he has had numerous repairs over the years. But all this just adds to his character.Dickens is an old bear with a story to tell…He does show signs of age and lovewear, and is not intended to be used as a toy as he does not have the safety features associated with modern teddy bears.Please take a look at the photos as a further description.
