For sale is Charles, an early 1930s (or late 1920s) golden mohair example of a large (24″) Chad Valley bear with upper front button.

History: Charles was bought from a Glasgow department store in the 1930s and has been in the family ever since, passing from generation to generation. He is in totally original condition, except for the eyes, with the nose, paws and feet stitching all original and in good condition. Unfortunately, the original eyes were removed by my mother for safety reasons (they were attached to long, sharp metal rods!) and subsequently misplaced. Bunny Campion (Antiques Road Show, see photo) said the replacements were quite wrong and suggested his current pair after discussion with the Teddy bear repair expert.

Condition: I think the photos show fairly well that Charles is in exceptional condition for his age. There are however a few things that any potential buyer needs to know. Firstly, the growler no longer works and it sounds as though the mechanism is now loose inside. The mohair is clean and plentiful everywhere, with one exception, one of the claw feet has a small bald patch about the size of a large coin, I have tried to capture this in one of the photos. Lastly, although all the limbs are attached and move freely, the left arm feels to me somewhat looser than ideal. Those are all of the negatives, but I need to repeat that Charles is a very attractive looking bear (and I suspect he knows it!).

I am not an expert in these things, so please let me know if I have omitted important details in the description and I shall try to elaborate.
