Herd we have Jack, a sweet and unusual little bear riding a metal tricycle, probably made by Chad Valley or Chiltern and dating to the 1950s. Both manufacturets uused the setvices of a teddy bear artist called Pam Howells, who first design the “bear on a bike” with a little art silk ringmaster bear with tassles to his jacket. She then went on to use monkeys, elves, rabbits and dogs, and eve created a Sooty bear on a bike. However, she also experimented with some designs which were not produced in big numbers, and I think Jack is one of these. I did sell a similar “model” where the bear looked like Jack but his plush was blue rather than brown, and he actually carried his Chad Valley label. So i feel pretty confident that this bear is definitely a Chad Valley or Chiltern design. There are a few differences between this bike and others I have sold for instance, there is no metal seat bar, see pics, but again, this could have been a prototype model. Jack himself is in good clean and sweet smelling condition, although his clothes are faded, and holey around where he sits on his bike, not surprising given how uncomfortable it looks!! An unusual old chap who displays beautifully in any old bear collection.
