Meet Christopher, An adorable, totally bald old English bear, fully jointed, with a “made in England” label stitched into his back seam, dating to the 1930s. He is 18″ tall with original painted back glass eyes a shaved muzzle and a hand stitched nose and mouth, with the dropped outer stitches common to Merrythought bears during this era, but as they never used “made in England” on their labels I am inclined to think he is a Pedigree bear. You can see that he has had a number of very careful patchwork repairs done in his past, which have held up very well. He also had another less effective repair undertaken, namely to the top of his right arm, where you can see his arm joint peeking through, see pics. He is as bald as a coot, so much so that I first thought he was made from Hessian rather than mohair, but if you look closely you can still see tiny wisps of mohair around his leg joints. He now wears a lovely outfit that suits him down to the ground as well as making sure that dodgy repair doesnt get any worse. It is becoming more difficult these days to find old bears with their labels intact, so what he lacks in fur he more than makes up for in other ways. He has loads of character, is clean and fresh smelling, and would make an amazing addition to any old bear collection.
