Here for your consideration is an extremely rare, vintage, circa 1960s, Farnell, 14″ mohair, teddy bear, with a really cute face, five-way jointed, original rexine paws, stub nose, and glass eyes.

This lovely teddy bear’s mohair is straw stuffed and still really deep and plush. My photos aren’t really capturing his true colour in reality he’s more of a deep golden mohair. He also has the remnants of his original red shield label which would have said “This is a Farnell Quality Toy” “Made in Hastings England.”

Condition: Very little mohair loss and he still retains part of his original Farnell label. His rexine paws do have some wear/tear/patina/patination, commensurate with age, but no repairs. Actually more to one paw (left) where he’s been held a lot over the years. For a bear that’s around sixty years old he is in fairly good original condition.

Could he be the one for you? He’s certainly very lovable and looking for a new home where he can play conkers and cuddle up with his new carer !!

J K Farnell …
A London based company which manufactured the first British teddy bear in 1906. Founded in Notting Hill, the firm was started in 1840 by a silk merchant, John Kirby Farnell, and made items such as pin cushions and tea cosies.
After Farnell’s death, his children, Henry and Agnes, continued the business from Acton in West London. They produced soft toys, moving from rabbit skin to mohair. Farnell rapidly became one of the leading teddy bear manufacturers, registering the Alpha trademark in 1925. “The Teddy Bear Encyclopedia” states that the Alpha Bear inspired the creation by A.A. Milne for Winnie the Pooh.
The company premises were destroyed by a fire in 1934 and by bombing in 1940. It finally ceased trading in the 1960s and the Farnell name was taken over by Merrythought in 1996.
