A gorgeous, rare brown mohair antique Steiff bear called Bertie, measuring 50 cms (20″) tall. He’s retained his earbutton and dates to c.1920s/30s. Stuffed with woodwool, Bertie is all original except for an old replaced paw pad, and has back-painted amber glass eyes, and a black-stitched nose and mouth. Some of his nose threads have worn away in part, and both ears have been re-secured.
Bertie’s felt pads show a little wear, especially one foot which has a hole about an inch long, while his left paw has a small darned repair. However, they’re all in reasonably good condition. The back of Bertie’s right paw has been patched in the past with brown mohair. Its a lighter shade than the rest of his fur, but not quite a pale as in my photos.
There’s a tilt growler clunking around inside hm, and when he feels like it he makes a brief grunt. All his joints work fine, and he has a good hump on his back. Bertie has incurred some nominal loss of mohair over the years, including a couple of bald patches at the back, and a few to his head. Overall, though, his fur coverage is impressive, and he’s a lovely sturdy ted with the classic Steiff expression collectors have come to know and love.
Bertie is wearing his vintage knitted jumper with a pattern of wigwams, and an old sweet caporal cigarette badge ‘Ah! There’. He assures me he has never smoked in his life! Also, on his feet he wears a pair of fawn suede booties, decorated with a tan leather flower. Thanks for looking!
