Uncle Sam is an awesome, early American Aetna bear c.1906. He stands a chunky 61 cms (24″) tall on large, card-lined oval feet, and is woodwool-stuffed. He’s retained all his original features, though his signature heart-shaped nose has been over-sewn in the past with brown thread. Some of his original black stitching is still intact underneath.

Fully-jointed, Uncle Sam has gleaming black glass eyes and a black embroidered mouth. His felt pads are in good condition, with just some small repairs to his feet, and he has a full set of claws. This hunky ted is in fab condition, having kept much of his short gold mohair. He’s attired in his pure silk American-flag and ship-themed tie, plus a vintage U.S. needle baseball cap embroidered with an Indian face. This is Uncle Sam’s modern-day version of what his iconic namesake would be wearing in the 21st century!

The Aetna Toy Animal Company was only in business for a short time, and sold exclusively through the wholesaler, George Borgfeldt and Co., in New York. Their bears were made of high quality materials, and each one had an oval outline with ‘Aetna’ stamped on the base of one foot. Very few surviving bears still have this stamp, as it inevitably faded over time. However, their distinctive features make them easily recognisable. Thanks for looking at this rare, native New Yorker!

Due to Uncle Sam’s size and weight, his postage overseas will be quite expensive, but I’m happy to provide a quote on request.
