Hello friends! Here I am looking at a version of myself in Pauline Cockrill’s Teddy Bear Encyclopedia p.104. I’m called Toffee, and I was based on the character in the popular 1950s-60s BBC children’s radio programme ‘Listen with Mother’, so I’m rather famous. I was made by Chad Valley, and have a Queen Mother Royal Warrant label on my right footpad.
You’ll notice I have a typical, high domed forehead, which I believe makes me a very brainy bear! My muzzle is flat, but my black-embroidered nose is quite bulbous. I no longer make a noise, and one of my mouth threads has been restored, otherwise I’m all original with amber glass eyes and rexine pads.
However, during my lifetime adventures I mislaid my signature red scarf and hat. But luckily I was kindly given similar ones to wear. They’re different shades of red, but keep me warm, especially in the snow! I’m fully-jointed, which enables me to move my head and limbs, and I’m firmly stuffed with something called ‘woodwool’. Over the years I’ve lost a little bit of my mohair, but still have plenty of lovely curly fur. It’s the colour of toffee, so I suppose that’s why I’m called Toffee Bear! I’m ever so cute, and don’t take up much space, so I hope you can give me a lovely new home. Thanks for looking at me. P.s. I don’t think much of the photographer – there’s a lot of over-exposure going on in the background of my pictures!
