Introducing Walter, an endearing early humpbacked Steiff bear, with the rare ‘centre seam’ running down the middle of his head. This only occurred on a small number of Steiffs, to make optimum use of the mohair, so that as little of the precious plush was wasted.
Walter no longer has his earbutton, and only wisps of his once apricot mohair remain. He has a loud tilt growler, but it’s likely to be a later addition – in the past he’s been lovingly repaired, and his woodwool- stuffing topped up with soft filling.
The old boy is 60 cms (24″) tall, with original boot button eyes and nose stitching. Part of his mouth has been resewn with brown thread, and all his pads recovered. Both feet are card-lined, but only one is original. His claws are original on both paws and foot, while the other brown ones are replacements. His ears have also been re-attached.
Although Walter is a good strong bear, he has a ‘bandaged’ repair to the front of one ankle, while his other ankle and foot have been completely recovered in the same material as his pads. It’s nevertheless a neat job. Walter’s head tilts engagingly to one side, and he’s simply a wonderful character full of enormous charm.
