Here we have Monty, a very rare version of the “Bear on A Bike” toy which was initially designed by Pam Howells of Chiltern, to be ridden by various Chiltern bears and dolls, including a Ringmaster bear, a Panda Bear, and an Elf Doll. Monty has glass eyes, a plastic doggie type nose and a stitched mouth, and his bike is beautifully made from metal.
I used to collect these toys and i have never ever seen one with a blue, art silk plush bear on the bike before. There are two possibilities. One is that Chad Valley actually copied the Chiltern design in the 1950s (as Monty carries the 1940s/50s blue and white Chad label) or, maybe this rare design was produced when Chad Valley first took over Chiltern in the mid 1960s, before they had even designed the new Chad Valley Chiltern label (which began to be used around 1967) so they gave Monty an old 1959s Chad label. Either way, he is a very interesting and rare example of a popular design , made at an important juncture during the history of bear manufactirers, when English companies were beginning to combine to fight off the growing competition from overseas. He is not pristine, but is bright and fluffy, clea and fresh smelling, and would make an amazing addition to your collection.
