Farnell ‘Wilfred Rabbit’ soft toy dating to the 1920’s.
Wilfred the rabbit was one of three cartoon characters that included Pip the dog and
Squeak the penguin featured in A.B Paynes cartoon strip in the daily Mirror in the 1920s.
This Farnell Wilfred rabbit measures 10 inches tall to the top of his head with his large floppy
ears adding an additional 6 inches in height. He is firmly stuffed with wood wool with a fixed
head and jointed arms and although he has been loved he still retains a good coverage of
his short golden mohair with some overall thinning and small bare patches. I would estimate
he has retained approximately 80% coverage overall.
Wilfred has had some stitched repairs in the past, by his right ear, right leg and tail and has
the slight residue of some old hardened glue! repairs in the same places. There are also some
tiny holes in his backing fabric here and there and his amber and black glass eyes look to be
vintage replacements. Despite his repairs, Wilfred is still in good sturdy condition and has
lost none of his charm and character and he would make a wonderful addition to any hug of
bears or soft toy collection.
*I also have a huge version of Wilfred rabbit who can be seen in the last photo to give
an idea of scale but this auction is for the small Wilfred only. The large Wilfred Will be offered
on eBay at some point in the future.
