This is an amazing, very special and very large antique toy rabbit, made by Merrythought in the 1930’s. He has two labels, one to his back and the other is stitched to one of his pink/blue shoes. Please check images.
My guess is that this stunning toy rabbit is possibly a one off, and he may well have been made as a shop display, something Merrythought have been known to do throughout their long history of teddy bears and toy making.
Rabbit has a jointed head, so he can be posed. He stands 36″ tall, including his ears, but between 28/29″, not including ears. His head is large and this possibly makes him even a bit top heavy, but I think this only adds to his charm.
He has all his original features; glass eyes – with faded pink painted backs, pink/white nose and mouth stitching, whiskers, velvet and mohair ears, and of course his blue and pink felt trouser suit. The suit has a jacket, waistcoat, trousers, scarf and shoes. There is also a pair of hand knitted socks but these are so tatty and full of holes, I have not photographed them.
The suit is clean but it has a number of holes, in various places, please check relevant pictures.
I consider the general condition of this exceptional antique toy to be good, but he clearly has some small imperfections.
