DISMAL DESMOND – by Dean’s Ragbook Co Ltd.

Dismal Desmond was a character invented by

Dean’s in the 1920’s and became the ‘Toy of the Year’

in 1926 and a household name for several years

afterwards.

The toy became a mascot for various institutions

including Wimbledon ladies and the English cricket

team at that time.

The unhappy Dalmatian, Dismal Desmond, was made in

several sizes from small to very large and the enclosed

cut-out sheet is the very large size.

The fabric used was Dean’s own ‘Fluffidown’ fabric

and he would have been soft-filled with a red tongue

and may have had a bow on the neck.

In 1928 a Cheerful Desmond was added to the range

and a cut-out sheet enclosed has small and medium

sizes of this character with a smiling face.

Each sheet measures appx. 39″ x 30″ and is in very

good condition.

Included in the memorabilia are 2 original

printed advertising leaflets – one showing

the fancy dress costumes available for

adults  from this toy and another advertising

Dean’s A1 toys along with the Dismal

Desmond items.
