Large and Lovable English Teddy Bear Probably Chad Valley c1923Stuffed with wood wool. 18mm amber glass eyes with black pupils. Large flat ears. Slight hump on back.
The first Chad Valley teddy bears were manufactured in 1915-1916 following a ban on German imports (including the popular Steiff and Bing teddy bears) to Great Britain. The Johnson Brothers company had previously made board games but trademarked the name Chad Valley for the production of soft toys. By 1920, they had so expanded they moved out of the Johnson factory in Harborne, Birmingham and into the Wrekin Toy Works in Ellington, Shropshire.
