BEAUTIFUL OLD 18″ MERRYTHOUGHT ‘CHEEKY’ BEAR CIRCA 1957-1959
This adorable old Merrythought ‘Cheeky’ Bear dates from around 1957 – 1959, and measures 18 inches in height.
He is five way disc jointed, all his joints are in very good firm condition, and he can sit up on his own without needing any support.As he is an early ‘Cheeky’ bear he is made of mohair (later versions were made of nylon).
His mohair is very clean and soft, and retains very good original colour with no noticeable age related fading. He retains approximately 99% mohair coverage.He is stuffed/filled entirely with kapok, which is still firmly and evenly distributed. He has his original large brown eyes, original vertically stitched nose and muzzle, and all four paw pads retain their original stitched claws.He still has his original bell in his ear.All four paw pads are original, they are complete and intact, however, as can be seen in the photos his upper paw pads have some minor light surface rubs . . . and he has parted company with his label at some point in career, but apart from these minor age related issues he is a lovely example of a vintage ‘Cheeky’ bear with hardly any playwear and very hard to fault.His baby blue grosgrain neck ribbon is vintage 1960’s but is not original to him.I have included lots of supersized photos in order to show his condition as accurately as possible . . . please take the time to study them carefully as they form an important part of the description.
