1920s or 30s Chiltern Hugmee Teddy Bear 19 inchesThis 19 inch tall Chiltern (Hugmee) bear probably dates to the 1920s or early 1930s. He does not have the card reinforcement in the feet, which was not introduced until the 1930s, which helps to date him. He is made of golden mohair and has clear glass eyes, one of which still has slight remains of the original paint behind. His nose and claw stitching is complete and original. He has a growler which works, whether this has been replaced at some time is hard to decide, the stitching on the back is very good if it has been opened. The paw pads have been sympathetically restored with matching cotton fabric, very similar to the original. One paw pad is discoloured and there is a faint white mark in the backing of the mohair on the top of his head, which is not really significant and I could not even get a photograph of it. He has some fur loss particularly to his stomach and front of his arms where he has been carried and loved. The rest of his fur is good. His mohair has faded from its original bright gold as can be seen from the photo. He is totally wood wool stuffed, which has compressed a bit in his arms and ankles, as is usual with this age of bear.
This is a lovely bear and I am only selling it because I have another similar bear and do not have room to put this one on display.
