I found this sweet-faced and clearly once much-loved little fellow in amongst some household junk at a market. I usually collect vintage toys other than teddy bears, but he just looked so forlorn on his own that I couldn’t leave him behind, and now I’d love to find him a loving home with someone who will really appreciate him once more.
Teddy bears aren’t really my area of expertise, but based on extensive online research, I believe he is very probably a so-called “dog nose” mohair Chiltern Hugmee dating from the 1950s. The paper attached to his neck reads ‘Ted 1957’ and was there when I bought him, but I have no idea where that information has come from. His other features are as follows:
– glass eyes- 5 working joints- firm, wood wool-stuffed head, and softer, kapok body and limbs
– rexine (I think) foot pads – hand pads looks to have been replaced
– there is a firm patch in his chest, where I assume there is a growler, but it is no longer working
– plastic “dog” nose
– 16″ tall
There is no label, so obviously I can’t be completely sure of my identification, but these features seem very consistent with other Chiltern Hugmee bears from the 1950s. I’m very happy to be corrected by someone with more knowledge if anything leaps out as wrong, and will edit the listing accordingly.
He could definitely do with some TLC. He is quite bald, but has retained a little fur; much more on his back than his front. His foot pads are worn, his mouth stitching is loose, and he has a few little injuries, most noticeably on his chest, where I think the growler has worn the fabric through. I have tried to document his condition as thoroughly as possible in the photos, so please do check them carefully.
Questions or superior information welcome, offers considered (as long as no bids have been placed; per eBay’s rules I cannot accept offers once items have active bids).
