Antique World War I era, Scottish Highlander felt doll, made by Harwin & Co.
This is an incredibly rare doll, and is very similar in style to the early felt dolls made by Steiff – facial seam, boot button eyes, airbrushed features etc.
He is dressed in a fantastically detailed uniform (believed to be based on the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders), including his kilt, Glengarry, hose-tops and spats.
He stands around 14 inches tall, and is he four-way jointed.
Although he’s faded in places, for the most part, his colours are generally still bright.
As you may expect given his age, he does have some damage. But it’s nothing that hugely detracts from his appeal.
This is a truly wonderful item, and is the doll version of Harwin’s famous Highlander “Ally” Bear, as sold at Christie’s a few years ago – www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-extremely-rare-harwin-co-ally-4536205-details.aspx.
