This is a very unusual bear, made from a cinnamon coloured art silk, and with 4 original metal buttons firmly attached to his chest, presumably to give the illusion of a jacket.
He also has a tail. I believe he was made by the German Gund firm, and earlier bears from this firm are hard to find.
He’s quite a character… unjointed but with wire armatures in his arms for posing, and big feet. The pads are made of felt, and as you can see the mitt shaped paw pads have been repaired and will need recovering. The foot pads are intact but with a few discoloured brownish marks.
He measures approx 14 inches, and has glass eyes, and original nose and mouth stitching.
His head is straw filled with softer filling elsewhere.
I would think he dates to the 1930’s/40s.
I’ve never seen a bear like this before, with metal buttons. I think he’s quite unique.
