Teddy Tumble -SUPER RARE 1900’s Somersaulting Antique Old Mohair Steiff Bear
This very rare TeddyChap is Teddy Tumble! He was made in the early 1900’s by Steiff – likely somewhere around 1908.
He is known as a somersaulting Teddy Bear. His mechanism doesn’t currently work, however you can hear the clicking nose and they move firmly so I think it should be an easy fix. When the mechanism is working you wind his arms back a number of times, and then he clockwork somersaults himself – very clever and amazing innovative for over 100 years ago!!
His head and legs are also jointed, he measures around 13inches tall, is wonderfully weighty and completely stuffed with woodwool. His pads have been recovered but the original felt can be seen on the feet and looks in good condition?! so the replacement pads may possibly be removed if desired.
Although like many Steiff bears this age he doesn’t have his button. He has however, retained his original brown hand and foot claw stitching, and original nose and mouth stitching. He also retains his beautiful securely fixed original boot button eyes. He’s covered in an ash blonde mohair, with some worn parts but generally really dense – very rarely seen on a bear this age!! He also sports a lovely steiff hump.
Teddy Tumble will travel to his new abode in his very old ribbon. He is a very very special teddy bear – one to be treasured. He would make a wonderful addition to a bear hug. If his new owner wanted to get his mechanism fixed he would hugely increase in value. Teddy Tumble is currently just really happy with life at present so is ok if he’s left as is. He is just looking for that special person with a little space in their home. x
