This fine, extremely rare 25″ 1920’s Farnell Wilfred rabbit is every inch as fabulous as he looks, and although I did my best, I feel that the photographs do not quite do him justice. You will notice that Wilfred has lost his original nose/mouth stitching and whiskers, but his large brown glass eyes are probably original.
His enormous (20″ long) ears are wired, and there is minor of damage/repair to them, as hopefully you will see from the images.
This marvellous toy rabbit was originally made in a turquoise blue mohair which unfortunately is now very sunlight faded, but you can see the true colour in a few of the close up condition images.
His paws are flexible, so they can be posed – as seen in the picture of him holding his basket of carrots!
This particular Wilfred was probably made for display in a major department store/shop window, I estimate during the early 1920’s.
For reference, I have included a picture of Wilfred together with relevant pages from Kathy Martin’s wonderful book, Farnell Teddy Bears.
The early antique Farnell Pip, Squeak and Wilfred toy characters are always popular, and I just wish I had the other two toys to complete this particular, stunning trio.
