Mr Hartley – SUPER RARE Harwin & Co Teddy Bear with hump 1910/20s Old English Antique
Introducing Mr Hartley! He is a very special bear – I love him! He’s a very rare ted made by the English manufacturers Harwin & Co, probably dating to around somewhere no later than the early 1920s. Harwin made lovely teddies, and are famous for their high-quality felt dolls, as well as their “Ally” bears which were produced during World War One. Harwin & Co was a relatively short-lived company and they closed their London factory in 1930, so nowadays their bears are very rare, in fact I’ve never held one before – they’re that hard to find!Like all their bears, Mr Hartley has clearly identifiable features such as a weighty build, long curved arms, straight legs spaced wide apart, cupped ears that are sewn into the facial seam, long claws, and of course a hump! Hartley stands around 19inches tall, is fully jointed and stuffed completely with woodwool. He feels lovely to hold as he really does have a good weight to him! He’s by no means a perfect teddy (if he was, he’d be worth a fortune), he is coming up to around 100 years old, after all! As you can see in the photos, he’s lost a lot of mohair and at some point his right hand has been restored but they have done an excellent job! Also his hand and feet pads have been re-covered, but I think this could possibly be to tie in with the restored hand, rather than necessarily because of damage to the originals which may still be underneath (I haven’t removed the felt to look). His painted-back glass eyes are replacements, but they are certainly old and from Mr Hartley’s era, and they look great on him and personally I think they add to his character. His muzzle and facial stitching is not original, but seems to have been professionally repaired (presumably by the same person who fixed his hand) as they’ve done a lovely job of his nose stitching, and seem to have used worn and faded thread, which matches his feet and hand claws wonderfully. For anyone who collects old and rare teds, he’s a truely lovely addition.Hatley does enjoy a stroll round the garden and a sit with his teddy friends on the shelf, but really .. what he’s longing for is a new special person who wants to be with him for more decades to come, so he can witness more shenanigans and be part of the family! Could you be his new fur-ever friend? All offers considered and I always combine postage costs where applicable. Any questions please message me :-)
I have lots of other bears etc for sale and many more to still list. Check out my other itemsIf you have any questions, or would like more information, photos or videos (as photos never do justice) please contact me using the Business Seller Information at the bottom of the page.
