The mohair on this bear is in such good, clean condition that it makes him look younger than he is, but although he has no labels, I’ve compared him with my own small collection of Chads, and I think he is a 1950s English teddy, made by Chad Valley. He is a small bear, at only 13 inches high.
He is in a lovely clean, honey coloured mohair, fully jointed, including a movable head, with a black, vertically stitched nose and a v shaped mouth. He has quite shapely arms and legs, with very worn rexine pads on all four paws – the only really worn thing about him – but with no stitching on his paws. He has a longish straight body, nice little ears, a slightly protruding and slightly shaved muzzle, and amber eyes that could be glass or plastic – I’m not sure. These are stitched into his face seams. He is pretty firmly stuffed all over, with a very solid and shapely head. He sits well and is a charming, if faintly grumpy looking ted.
The only other damage, besides the wear and tear on the paws, showing the canvas beneath, is a row of stitching down his tummy. You should be able to see it on one of the pictures. If you feel his tummy, he has a growler of some kind – you can just feel the hard circle of it. It isn’t working and it may be that somebody did some surgery on his middle, either to deactivate it or to attempt a repair. He has been very neatly sewn back up again.
