Poor old bear, he’s seen better days, but I haven’t the heart to send him to the Happy Teddy Hunting Grounds. Perhaps you can give him a new lease of life…?

Bear is stuffed with wood shavings, and what I think is kapok. His limbs are jointed, with wooden washers. His neck is also jointed, so he can swivel his head. I’m sure his fur is mohair; following the advice on an antiques website, I tested a tiny sample, which turned to ash when burnt, rather than turning to a blob of plastic. I think this dates him to around the 1920s, though I can’t be certain. I do know that he was already an old bear when he came to live with us in the early 1970s. The only feature which doesn’t fit in with the 1920s period is his plastic eyes, but it’s very probable that these are replacements.
