A Steiff felt Tyrolean boy made by Margarete Steiff circa 1913.
Margarete Steiff founded the Steiff company in Germany in 1877. The company had originally made felt underskirts but Margarete branched out into toy-making and applied for the first patents in 1892. Having expanded her range of animals (including the iconic teddy bears), Margarete began making felt dolls in the early years of the twentieth century. These were unlike any other doll available as they were modelled on real children and they were unbreakable so more child-friendly. Most remarkable is the gentle, poetic expressions on their faces. The early dolls had tiny boot button eyes but around 1913, Margarete sourced beautiful blue glass eyes with black irises as can be seen in this example.

Height 11 or 28cm.
