OLD ANTIQUE ‘JOY TOYS’ MOHAIR KANGAROO & HER JOEY CIRCA 1930 – 1940

This delightful antique kangaroo and baby joey were manufactured in Australia by ‘Joy Toys’.The mother kangaroo still retains her original stitched on Joy Toys label at the bottom of her pouch (see photo), the baby joey doesn’t appear to have ever had a label, but they are definitely a pair/made by the same company.The mother kangaroo measures approximately fourteen inches in height and the little baby joey measures approximately three and a half inches in height.Unfortunately I cannot be certain as to when they were made, although they are both definitely antique/of some age. In my opinion they probably date from sometime around 1930 to 1940, but if anyone reading this can tell me more about them I would love to hear from you.Although the mother kangaroo isn’t jointed, she has wire armatures running through her arms, legs, body and tail, which means she can move her arms and legs, albeit limitedly (if she is handled with due care) and as you can see from the photos, she can be posed holding her little joey in her arms.The baby joey is simply adorable, and my photos don’t do it justice, it is far nicer in reality. The baby is unjointed, has no wire armatures and in a fixed/stationary position.They are both made from beige/fawn mohair, and stuffed entirely with wood wool. Their stuffing is still quite firm and evenly distributed, apart from the mother kangaroo’s head being a little bit wobbly (the stuffing has shifted a little in her neck). The mother kangaroo has original boot button eyes and original black stitched nose and mouth. The baby joey has original black stitched eyes, nose and mouth.The mother kangaroo has a discoloured patch on her tail which is shown on the photos, I have never attempted to remove it, but it may well be possible to remove it or lessen it by careful cleaning. She also has a very neatly, expertly closed repaired seam on her right arm, but this is less than 1 centimetre in length and is extremely difficult to see even under close scrutiny.The baby joey retains approximately 95% mohair coverage, whilst his mother retains approximately 90% mohair coverage. Both mother and joey have playwear and a few age related rubbed and worn patches, and mainly around the limbs but this does not detract greatly from their undoubted appeal.In addition to the 12 supersized photos on the listing title page, there are many more photos below this description, please take the time to study them as they form an important part of the description.The vintage brown silk neck ribbons worn by both kangaroo’s are not original to them. These two antique kangaroo’s are difficult to find, and would be a wonderful addition to any collection.Both mother and joey display very well indeed and have a great deal of charm and appeal.
