A large and lovable, vintage German Steiff bear with earbutton c.1950s. Called Grandad, he measures an impressive 66 cms (26″) tall – about the size of a small child! Grandad is all original and very firmly stuffed with woodwool. His huge flat feet have thick carded soles, which have worn through his left pad, and to a lesser degree his other foot too, where there’s an old sewn repair. However, his equally giant felt paws are in minty condition. I’ve a feeling Grandad may have been made for display purposes, as I’ve seen similar Steiffs of his size, but without the carded insoles, and he does look fairly magnificent when he’s stood up.
Fully-jointed, Grandad has big, back-painted amber glass eyes, and a brown-stitched nose and mouth. Having growled his way through life, he’s now silent, preferring to sit quietly reading his German newspaper. Despite being retired, and his caramel mohair having turned slightly grey with age, Grandad still has plenty of curly fur. However, there’s a little thinning and some baldness, mostly to his torso and top of muzzle.
Feeling the cold nowadays, Grandad is wearing his lovely warm wool hat and coat, with a vintage brass teddy brooch and neck ribbon. He’s a hefty old bear, and his fare overseas will be astronomical, so he really needs to spend the rest of his days in the UK. However, if anyone would like a postage quote, please email me.
