This very special, and to my eyes, extremely fine looking, beautiful old bear has clearly been the recipient of an excess of love over the years. Basically, he is now in a sorry state!
It is hard to determine who made him, although he does have some early Steiff teddy characteristics. Unfortunately he has no button, so it is hard to say for sure.
I am certain that he is an early teddy bear and probably dates to pre 1910.
He has the right shape for a very early 20th Century teddy bears, i.e. long elongated limbs, long and pronounced snout, etc.
I think he would have had a hump to his back, but he has been opened to both his front and back, so I think his tummy/back shape will have altered over the years.
Please take time to view all of the images because these will be the most helpful guide to item condition and description, but do please read the written condition report too as this highlights his many “health” issues!
Personally, I adore the wear and tear to this old teddy bear, and if I were able to keep him, he would live with me exactly as he is – wearing his fab antique military style coat. However, he has to leave for his “forever” home, and so any decision regarding restoration I leave entirely to the buyer.
