Farnell Vintage Teddy Bear 20″ Mohair 5 Disc Jointed
I believe this is a Farnell Bear from the 1950’s. There are no tags but was identifed by an expert appraiser.
RARE VINTAGE STUFFED TEDDY BEAR. Featuring soft golden Mohair fur, cloth paw pads, vertically stitched nose and amber plastic eyes.
Teddy measures 20 inches tall from head to foot.
He has an unpredictable growler/grunter which sometimes works when you flip the bear down quickly. His stuffing is very stiff, not soft and huggable. Thinning fur and paw pads – his fur is shedding when he is handled.
Farnell made the original Edward bear, an Alpha bear from 1921. So, he is a direct descendant. This model dates to the late 50s, is made from mohair and has the typical Rexine pads, with wear, revealing the twill cotton backing. Four claws were standard, along with the cord nose and mouth extension. He is stuffed with kapok, a natural cotton, and excelsior. At birth, a printed label in red, white and blue, was sewn into the left side seam. The eyes seem to be plastic.
At 20, this is a good sized teddy. He was probably carried by an ear…which is why one is missing. The mohair loss on the side of his head is most probably due to an unfortunate meeting with a moth. They love the sweet mohair, and nibble away! Farnell was Englands premier maker, and they remained in business until 1968. The vintage growlers are seldom working due to a broken seal in the mechanism. This growler only works occasionally.
