Here we have an exceptionally rare example of Walt Disney’s Oswald the Magic Rabbit, made sometime between the late 1920s and early 1930s, either before or after Deans got the patent to make a version of Disneys early Mickey Mouse.He is 12″ tall, from the top of his ears to the tips of his tippy toes. You can just about make out the airbrushed “ratty smile” which characterised both these toys and the Mickey Mouse design, but thankfully it has faded away to almost nothing with this little chappie, giving him a far more pleasant aspect than the very few other examples I have seen photos of. Because there are so few photos of these chaps, it is difficult to know what is original and what is not, but essentially he has his original boot button eyes and nose, and no damage to his material apart from a missing couple of stitches to his front seam, see pics. His material also pretty bright and unfaded. I am not sure whether his woolly bobtail is original as i have never seen the reverse of one of these fellows. Everything else appears original except for the tops of his feet which appear to have been knitted over. It is very difficult to find much info on these charming, rare toys. Even my Deans history book, written by Deans director Neil Miller, mentions the Mickey Mouse doll (which incidentally Walt Disney hated when he saw it, and tried to stop production despite having agreed to the license) but does not mention Oswald. So I have no idea whether he was created before or after Mickey, only that Oswald is indeed a Deans creation, and very, bmvery similar in design to their Mickey. He clean and fresh smelling and would make a unique and interesting addition to any old toy collection.
