A gorgeous little antique teddy bear – 4.5 inches / 11.5cm high, with golden fur and golden and black glass eyes. His nose, mouth and claws are stitched with black cotton, the tops of his feet are a lighter coloured mohair to match his muzzle and the bottom of his feet are felt I believe. He is filled with straw or fine wood chips. He’s lost some of his hair, and some of his black claws, and he has a repair to the top of his left leg. Old hinges can be seen on his right leg and his left arm. He is jointed. I’ve been told he’s a soldier bear, and these were made for soldiers in the first world war – their eyes would peep out from the top of the soldier’s breast pocket. I hadn’t heard of this before.
