Quite some years ago I purchased three or four of these super original antique Steiff buttons (the original knopf im ohr identification button) from an old toy workshop in Germany which had some old stock which included just a few Steiff buttons pressed into a small piece of old card.
The buttons were more or less the same shape and size and were unused. It is 5mm in size, looking like an early nickel plate on iron button, but the plating has worn off the outside entirely leaving a dark colour which is shown most accurately in the final photo which, I’m afraid, looks a bit fuzzy. The other photos are deliberately lightened to show detail, but please be aware that the actual colour is a dark, iron patination with no silvering. It was SO difficult to photograph this little button!
The silvering still remains on the inside of the button, however and the prongs of the button are unused, straight and strong, ready for appropriate use, finally, in a wonderful original early Steiff bear who has lost his ID and needs to be restored to his former glory.
