Antique World War I era, Scottish Highlander felt doll, made by Harwin & Co.
This is an incredibly rare doll fit for a museum, and is very similar in style to the early felt dolls made by Steiff – facial seam, boot button eyes, airbrushed features etc.
She is an “Ally Girl” – Harwin did an English & Scottish version of both soldier dolls and Ally girls! These were designed to have more detailed and pretty faces including eyelashes! She is dressed in a fantastically detailed uniform (believed to be based on the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders), including her kilt, Glengarry, hose-tops and spats.
She stands around 14 inches tall, and is four-way jointed.
Although she’s faded in places, for the most part, her colours are generally still bright.
As you may expect given her age, she does have some damage. But it’s nothing that hugely detracts from her appeal.
This is a truly wonderful item, and is the doll version of Harwin’s famous Highlander “Ally” Bear, as sold at Christie’s a few years ago – www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-extremely-rare-harwin-co-ally-4536205-details.aspx.
