THE SWEETEST VERY EARLY C1905-1910
ANTIQUE AMERICAN TEDDY BEAR 17″

This darling happy faced antique teddy bear does not have a makers label, but he is undoubtedly a scarce and early American teddy bear made between 1905 – 1910.
Ideal (Novelty and Toy Co.) are thought to have made the first American teddy bears in 1903 . . . I cannot say with any certainty which company manufactured this adorable little bear, but his triangular shaped head and muzzle, his large rounded sliced in ears (slotted into holes in his head) set low down on his head, and his large pointed feet are typical features of early American bears,
He measures approximately 17 inches in height including his ears, and 16 inches to the top of is head (not including his ears). He is five disc way jointed with all joints in very good firm condition and able to pose in different positions for display.
He is made of fairly long pile dark golden mohair which retains approximately 95% coverage and is clean and soft with a lovely soft muted sheen to it. He is filled entirely with woodwool which is firmly and evenly distributed and has a non operative large tilt growler located in his torso. All four paw pads are original and other than very minor age related marking they are in very good condition. He has original claw stitching on all four paw pads – 4 claws on each upper paw, and 6 on each lower paw. Unusually, he has a double stitched claw underneath each lower paw pad. He has stitched in painted back glass eyes, horizontally stitched nose with vertical end stitches and the most adorable smiling muzzle. His muzzle appears to be clipped (or it may just be the result of too many kisses from his original little owner!) Viewed in profile his muzzle is comparitively small and pointed, but shapely and well defined. He has a small hole in his left ear (see close up photo below) which suggests that he might originally have had an ear button . . . or it may simply be a just a small hole? He has very long arms and comparatively short legs set quite high up on his hips. His large pointed shaped feet have paw pads which are much smaller in comparison (see close up photo). He has very unusual claw stitching on both feet – the two middle claws go completely under each paw and are continued the opposite side. He is a very clean bear with no musty or unpleasant odours. He has minor, light generall overall playwear, none of which merits individual mention, but he has no serious faults or issues, and considering that he is more than 100 years old he is in very good condition. Please take the time to look at the listing photos before bidding, as they form an important part of the description, and show his condition far more accurately and clearly than any written description! His antique dark red neck ribbon, antique crochetwork collar and pretty silver embossed decorative bell are not original to him, but suit him very well and are included in the sale.
