Antique c.1900 Velvet Elephant on Wheels with Hard Tusks
This is Nelly, very rare antique velvet push-along elephant, on 4-spoke wheels. Looking at her quality and the colour of her velvet now, I think she was probably made by Steiff. Although given her age she would most likely be pre-button, making it very hard to be certain.
I believe her to be around 110-120 years old and over that time, she has faded a lot so that her velvet is now mostly a green-brown with just protected areas under her ears remaining dark grey.
She’s hard stuffed with wood wool and has hard tusks that are ivory coloured – they may be ivory, I wouldn’t know how to tell. Her eyes are small round boot button and I think are original, although one has been reattached a long time ago. She also still has her original tail intact.
She’s wearing the remains of an old red blanket with tassles, which I think may be a very old replacement – this is stitched to her body.
Her wheels move freely and she stands well – she’s tricky to measure but is approximately 24cm tall and 33 cm long.
She’s a lovely little elephant and would look fantastic with a collection of old teddy bears.
