Unusual carved wooden comical dog figure. Circa 1930’s.
This carved and painted dog figure stands at approximately 4″ (110 mm) tall
and is marked on the base in pencil ‘UNCLE ARTHUR 1953″ but from the look of him,
I think he dates to 1930 or thereabouts and the name was possibly written at a later date.
He reminds me of comical long neck soft toy dogs that were made by Farnell & Chiltern
around the 1920’s and he also has a George Studdy’ish (of Bonzo fame) feel about him too
but I don’t know who made him or what character he is supposed to be!?
He is a very charming carved toy though and has lots of character and apart from being
a little bit grubby, he is in very good condition with no damage or repairs and would sit
very nicely amongst a collection of antique bears and toys.
