Amazing antique teddy bear. Has been stored safely away in a box for a great number of years and is now being sold as part of our late gran’s estate clearance.
This is a very special, early bear, circa 1910 – 1920’s era. He is approximately 16″ tall and has a well formed hump back, beige mohair, straw-filling, stitched nose mouth and claws, fabric pads and moving limbs. Surprisingly his squeaker is still working – press his upper tummy area and he makes a low pitched squeaking noise. He has a shaved muzzle, long arms and legs, original glass eyes (clear glass with black in the middle).
I am no Ted expert but a friend at my workplace has had a look at the bear and has told me that he might be an early Steiff but is more likely to be an early Gebruder Bing Bear (German?). Ted has no button or label in his ear but he does have a stiff area under his left arm and what looks like the remains of a metal tag where a button or label may have been attached to him so I am informed that this means the bear is more likely to be a Bing? I have taken a photo of the underarm area so if you are a bear collector please look at this and see what you think. Hopefully someone can identify this old chap.
Ted has been well loved, as you can see from the photos he has a very worn snout / muzzle and the straw is showing through in some areas of his poor old shaved muzzle. His pads are very worn and look like replacements but have now worn out. His stitched claws are worn. Some small holes in his left arm and areas of his lovely mohair is quite worn. (Please see photos). His tummy seam looks as if it may be been tidily re-stitched at some point.
An amazing old bear and I so much hope that he can find a new home where he can be loved and taken great care of in his very old age. He is still smiling after all these years – a happy bear!
If you need any more information or photos of this old ted please drop me a line before bidding. I am no ted expert but happy to help.
Ted will be well packed and shipped with tracking info.
